DAY 2
Matthew Henry states in “Matthew Henry Consise Commentary” on the Parable of the Lost Sheep:
...and [the sheep] exposed to certain ruin if not brought back to him {Jesus}, yet [the sheep] not desirous to return.
God cannot make us sin–why would a perfect and just God demand that we not sin, yet ask us to sin? No, we sin when we follow our own ugly desires. And what does that bring to us: death. Sin separates us from life of God.
Matthew Henry illustrated eloquently what sin does to our relationship with God with his thoughts on James 1:13-18:
As the sun is the same in nature and influences, though the earth and clouds, often coming between, make it seem to us to vary, so God is unchangeable, and our changes and shadows are not from any changes or alterations in him. What the sun is in nature, God is in grace, providence, and glory; and infinitely more.”
Sin, like the clouds in his illustration, comes between us and God. Jesus, like a cleansing wind can remove those sinful obstructions, leaving us to experience God’s glorious life unhindered once again.
Sin has brought physical death and spiritual death–this is the forever death in eternal punishment that separates from God.
On Day One, we discussed what sin is–becasue why should anyone care that Christ saves us from sin if we don’t even know that sin is sin and that we all are sinners. We do things that separate us from God both here on this corporal earth as well as in eternity. Day two we focus on this very idea: what sin does to us. Sin leads to death.

Jesus Leads Sheep to Safety BobblesDiscussion With Miss ShelleyThis river and the bad ground is like sin, it separates the sheep from Jesus and is dangerous. The sheep could die if they are not saved from the bad area and raging river. But Jesus can carry them to safety. Without Jesus, the sheep would be stuck on the unsafe side. With Jesus they will have life.

What we didWe made banana, cookie, and yogurt parfaits.
|
Sin Separates ParfaitsDiscussion With Miss SandiSin separates us from God.
Summarize Genesis 3:14-19 (God pronounces Adam and Eve’s punishments, to include death). We can feel the Sun which is the same in its nature, so God is unchangeable. But sin, just like clouds can come between us and God. Then we can’t feel the sun the in the same way. We can’t see the sun clearly anymore. Sin keeps us from feeling God or seeing God clearly too. Put some scoops of banana into your cup. This is you. [Wait for the kids to scoop a couple spoonfuls of smashed bananas into the bottom of their cups.] Now put some cookies or crackers on top of the banana. This is sin. [Wait for the kids to scoop a couple spoonfuls of crushed cookies into their cups.] Put yogurt on top of the cookies or crackers. This is God. [Wait for the kids to scoop a couple spoonfuls of yogurt into their cups.] Sin sometimes seems really good, just like those cookies or crackers taste really good. But sin keeps us from the heatlhy life in God. Kids can eat their parfaits. |
What we didWe tried koolaid that didn't taste right because it had been made with salt. But then we had the right kind made with sugar as our snack.
|
Trick KoolaidDiscussion With Miss SandiWhat’s wrong with the Kool-Aid? It looks normal. Are you sure something is wrong with it? How can it be bad if it looks okay? Sometimes Satan tricks us with sin the same way. It looks great on the outside, but it’s really bad for us.
Offer the kids the good (sugar) Koolaid to drink as part of their snack break. |
What we didWe watched a puppet show about the first part of the Parable of the Lost Sheep.
Beat 9: Seems to get what they want Lamby sees a beautiful field in the distance, with tons of dancing butterflies Beat 10: Consequences for false victory Lamby runs for the field, falls off the cliff edge and lands on a ledge. Beat 11: All is Lost: Lamby is stuck on cliff baaing forlornly Beat 12: Dark Night of the Soul Lamby dreams of the flock and the fields of grass |
TheaterDiscussion With Miss DarcienWhat happened when Lamby ignored Jesus’ instructions? He landed in a dangerous place. A place that if Jesus doesn’t come to save him, he will die.
When we sin what happens to us? It leads us to do things that God doesn’t want us to do. The bible says that sin leads to death. [Have the kids turn to Romans 6:23 in their bibles and place a Green sticky note with the scripture reference in that place. Have a child, if possible, read the scripture outloud.] Adam and Eve didn’t listen to God. They didn’t trust that he would tell them the truth. Because they listened to lies they wanted to listen to, they sinned. The sin had a consequence. We have consequences too, don’t we? Can you think of a time when you didn’t listen to mom and dad? Was there consequence? Did mom and dad have to punish you with time out or by taking something you wanted away? God had to give Adam and Eve a consequence too: [Have the kids turn to Genesis 3:14-19 in their bibles and place a Green sticky note with the scripture reference in that place. Have a child, if possible, read the scripture outloud.] What were their consequences? It led to death. They could no longer can live forever with God in paradise. We can’t either... [Have the kids turn to James 1:13-15 and place Green sticky note with the scripture reference in that place. Have a child, if possible, read the scripture outloud.] But we do have hope. Who is our hope? Jesus. |
What we didWe used paper straws as "needles" to thread black yarn back and forth over the heart.
|
Sin Blackened HeartDiscussion With Miss DarcienWe have hearts that want to know God. But when we disobey mommy or daddy, it leaves a sinful mark on our hearts. [Pull yarn from one hole to another across the heart. Show the children and have them do it too.]
When we get angry and hit our friends or brothers or sisters, that leaves a sinful mark on our hearts. [Repeat the criss-cross sewing pattern. Have the kids do it too.] Can you think of something we do or think or say that would make God sad because it leaves a sinful mark on our hearts? [Let each child offer a sinful behaviour or attitude. With each suggestion, cross back over the heart, with the children following suit.] [When ready, continue with] Look at our hearts. Are our hearts the same as they were before the sins? The sins make it hard to see our hearts, doesn't it? I hope our hearts don't have to remain covered in sin.... [This craft continues to Day Three, so gather the hearts and store for the next day.] |
MusicDiscussion With Miss PennyOur song reminds us of the parable (story) Jesus told His disciples in the bible Book of Luke: The Parable of the Lost Lamb. The lamb was safe with Jesus but then leaves the safety Jesus provided. But what did Jesus do? He went to look for the lost lamb. He went through all of the troubles and dangers to find His precious lamb. In the parable, Jesus CARRIES the lamb back to safety, because only Jesus can save us from our sins.
Teaching: Jesus Had a Little Lamb
(This song is sung to the tune “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.) Jesus had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb Jesus had a little lamb, the lamb He loved to guide Jesus kept it very safe, very safe, very safe Jesus kept it very safe, all its needs provided It walked away from Him one day, Him one day, Him one day It walked away from Him one day and was surely lost Little lamb cried loud and clear, loud and clear, loud and clear Little Lamb cried loud and clear, “I can’t pay the cost” Jesus then searched high and low, high and low, high and low Jesus then searched high and low, through sun and rain and snow Too He called out for the lamb, for the lamb, for the lamb Too He called out for the lamb, the lamb His voice did know. Jesus found his little lamb, little lamb, little lamb Jesus found his little lamb, does Jesus love it so! Jesus loves his little lamb, little lamb, little lamb Jesus loves his little lamb, He washes white as snow. Jesus loves his little lamb, little lamb, little lamb Jesus loves his little lamb, He washes white as snow. |
Make a NoiseDiscussion With Miss PennyDavid played music and danced before the Lord–he was praising God with his body and voice.
Play the song and let the kids dance and make as much noise as the Holy Spirit leads them. What we didWe used pots, and pans, and many other household items to make a joyful noise.
And learned the song "Jesus Had a little Lamb." Entangled Rope GameDiscussion With Miss PennySin entangles us. It can seem fun. But it keeps us from being productive, keeps us from experiencing joy; makes us sad eventually; and makes those we love, like mom and dad, our siblings, our favorite people, and God sad. That entangling sin leads to death. We want to be free from the entangling power of sin. We can be free from sin if we accept that Jesus died for us and He takes away our sin.
What we didPlayers will be working in pairs during this challenge (if you have an odd number put them into a group of three). One participant places their wrists in the loops, the other then places one of their hands in one loop, takes the other end of the rope and intertwines once with the partner’s rope before placing the other wrist in their loop. You will want to physically show people how to do this to make the process easier for all.
Once the partners are connected, the ropes must remain, at all times, on the wrists they started on. The objective is to get everyone free from their partner. |
What we didWe used our bodies as board pieces and tried to get to God at the top by rolling dice and moving that many spaces. We hoped we wouldn't land on sin at the had of a snake, because sin leads to death at the bottom of the snake. We did like landing on Jesus, who transforms our lives and leads to fruits of the Spirit (closer to God0.
|
Snakes and Ladders GameDiscussion With Mr. NickSin leads to death, just like we see in the bible when Adam and Eve meet the snake. They chose to listen to the snake instead of their loving God. Or like in Romans 6:23 where it says tells us that sin leads to death. Or in the Book of James 1:13-15 that says our wrong wants and desires will lead to sin, and then to death. But Jesus saves us and He helps us to do right things.
|
END OF OUR DAY
When all our fun was done. We gathered in the sanctuary to
Re-CapWe talked about what we learned and then we prayed for each other. |
Dismissal BlessingFather Steven blessed us and then we got our things together to wait for our family to get us. |
