Devotion: Can we be citizens and Christians?"Show me a coin used for paying the tax.” The men showed him a silver coin. Then Jesus asked, “Whose picture is on the coin? And whose name is written on the coin?” 21 The men answered, “Caesar’s.” Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. And give to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:19-21. What do you think Jesus meant when He said "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's"? Jesus acknowledges that we have civic duties, that is, duties to the community around us and our government. So we should obey those authorities when their rulings and judgements don't demand that we act against God who is the ulitmate authority in all things. Jesus also reminds us that ultimately we must give to God those things God requires of us. The commands God gives us are for our benefit and the benefit of others. We give God our love, devotion, faith and obedience because we grow closer to God when we learn about who he is and why he loves us. We help others when we give our money and skills--tithe. Tithe and skills help the church to do the Great Commission: ...Go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you. (Matthew 28:19-20 ICB) We pay taxes to our government because it helps the government to do good things for all of us. We give to God what is God's because it helps all of us too.
