Devotion: Can we be citizens and Christians?"Show me a coin used for paying the tax.” The men showed him a silver coin. Then Jesus asked, “Whose picture is on the coin? And whose name is written on the coin?” 21 The men answered, “Caesar’s.” Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. And give to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:19-21. What do you think Jesus meant when He said "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's"? Devotion: Sometimes We ForgetOur Gospel reading this week is from Matthew 22:15-22 and it talks about giving to Caesar (the government) what belongs to the Government–like taxes– but to give to God what is God's. In the Old Testament book Malachi 3:6-12 we see that God is correcting His people because they were not giving God the portion of their things (called tithe) that God commanded them to do. Sometimes we are like the people of God in Malachi. Sometimes we forget that everything we have is because God gave it to us. We might forget to thank God for the things we have. We might forget to follow God's commandments. Preparation Gather sticky notes and pens/markers/pencils. Gather bibles. Discussion The Gospel, Matthew 22:1-14, reading illustrates God’s wish to invite all to accept the gift of Christ’s salvation, and Jesus used a story about a wedding feast–who wouldn’t want to go to a fancy wedding feast? The old testament talks about the invitation to celebrate salvation with God. It is found in the book of Isaiah chapter 25 verses 6-9. And the book of Romans says: And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Action Write “Invitation” on three sticky notes per child (if the child can do it themselves, let them). Then place one sticky note on the gospel reading for the week Matthew 22:1-14, and Isaiah 25:6-9 and Romans 1:6. |
